As part of the ongoing transition to a new database system (Routing Policy Specification Language), Merit strongly encourages providers to begin running their own local registry. Much as the Internet trasitioned from a centralized hosts.txt file to DNS, RPSL provides the tools for Internet providers to manage their own local routing information in a secure, distributed fashion.
Download IRRdIRRd, the Internet Routing Registry daemon. is one of the freely available database tools that have been developed for local registries. Information about downloading and installing the software is available from the IRRd home page.Other freely available tools include BIRD and the RIPE database software.
